Ocean Disciplines

Anyone who knows the beautiful Oregon Coast knows that there's no lack of exciting terrain for a multi-sport event! Although the mountains aren't towering and don't contain much in the way of impressive elevations to the summits, they're all steep! Be prepared for some tough hill climbing, bushwhacking, paddling, and navigation for this race!

This race will emphasize the Paddling and Trekking (think "off road" and "off trail"!) stages of the race. Mountain biking will not be as "epic" or long as in past races.
  • Tough navigation
Navigation is always a component of a Wicked race. Come prepared with the knowledge and basic skills to use your Compass (setting a bearing, taking a bearing, following a bearing), map reading skills (interpretting contour intervals, trails, roads, topographic features, etc.), route selection (determining which route is the "best" route), etc.

The Sport Course always contains "easier" navigation choices, but you will still need to understand basic navigation. If you are unfamiliar with the above concepts, you would be wise to practice navigation by attending some Orienteering events and gaining practical experience.

Pro Course teams - we'll be throwing in a lot more tougher navigation choices and route selection options for you guys.
      Duration: The entire race!
PRO Course: You WILL have to be able to plot UTM coordinates
SPORT Course: You will NOT hae to plot UTM coordinates
  • Exciting paddling
The Paddling section (both Sport and Pro Course) will be on flat water - you will not be on the open ocean. You will be dealing with currents and tidal flow in the protected bay. There is the potential for high winds, which may create some wave action to deal with. There is no White Water paddling in this race.
Pro Course Duration: 5 to 10 miles
Sport Course Duration: 3 to 6 miles
  • Up-up-up hill trekking
That says it all! Expect to gain some elevation during the trekking stage. Teams will be both on trails, firelanes, and bushwhacking in this race. NOTE: There will be a fair amount of bushwhacking in this race.
Pro Course Duration: 10 to 18 miles
Sport Course Duration: 5 to 10 miles
  • Mountain biking
This race will not be as big on the mountain biking as is the case with previous races. Expect to spend a LOT more time on your feet, than in the Mountain Biking section (hey, we believe you should be able to RIDE your bike during the MTB section ... no forced bike-whacking!).
Pro Course Duration: 10 to 20 miles
Sport Course Duration: 7 to 14 miles
  • NO ROPES
There will be no ropes in this race.

Hope you're out there training hard for this one!
